Changing Seasonal Skincare How To

A change in seasons requires a change in skincare routine. Your skin likes consistency, so when the temperature changes so does your skin. As the temperature drops the humidity declines.  You also tend to turn up the heat that further robs moisture from your skin. A decline in water consumption is common when the season changes to cold. As a result, it’s often another culprit that causes your skin to work harder to maintain skin hydration.

We also tend to take warmer showers in colder months and this is also a negative contributor to your overall skin health.  Common skin changes are dry skin, patchy and flaky dry spots, and often the skin complexion appears dull and rough. Therefore, a change in seasons usually requires a change in your skincare routine or skin care products, or a combination of both.

Skincare Tips:

  1. If you prefer to take hot showers, take shorter ones.  Keep it under 10 minutes.
  2. Avoid hot water, especially on your face.
  3. Wash your face at the sink rather than in the shower to cool off your skin.
  4. Apply moisturizer within 60 seconds of washing your face.  It is important to lock in skin moisture.
  5. Depending on your skin type, consider changing your moisturizer to something richer in texture.
  6. If you prefer to stick with your light-weight moisturizer or have sensitive skin, add a serum to your skincare routine to provide more moisture.
  7. When adding a new product, best to test it on one little area of your face to avoid skin irritation or acne breakouts.  This is especially important if you have sensitive skin.
  8. Do not forget to moisturize your neck and chest.  What you do for your face, should also be applied to your neck and chest.

Use a gentle pH balanced and fragrance-free cleanser that does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).  In general, avoid soaps that cause your skin pH levels at out of sorts. Using soaps will also strip the natural oils that act as a protective barrier to the skin.

Skincare Tips: UseGentle Facial Cleansers

  1. Using gentle facial cleansers is paramount to keeping your skin pH at healthy levels.  Use a gentle pH balanced and fragrance-free cleanser that does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).  In general, avoid soaps that cause your skin pH levels to go out of sorts. Using soaps will also strip the natural oils that act as a protective barrier to the skin.

Always use a cleanser that is not formulated with detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). Other synthetic ingredients such as synthetic fragrances dry out the skin and affect your “acid mantle”.  Here’s what can happen when you disrupt the acid mantle:

  • Your skin moisture evaporates, drying out your skin.
  • Your skin becomes more sensitive and is unable to protect itself from the environment and every day pollutants.
  • Bacteria multiply, causing blemishes, acne and acne breakouts.

Therefore, it is important to use a gentle pH balanced cleanser, especially during cooler to cold seasons as well as for people who have combination, dry and sensitive skin types.

Try Soul Story’s gentle yet effective pH balanced Purifying Cleansing Foam.  It will wash away pollutants, dirt, make-up, and excess oil without stripping away moisture.

Skincare Tips: Sunscreen Year-Round:

  1. It is paramount to continue to apply broad spectrum sunscreen during cooler to cold weather as the sun’s UVA and UVB rays remain strong year-round, even on overcast days since the UV rays can be even stronger and penetrate through clouds and windows.
  2. Apply sunscreen after your moisturizer but before applying make up even if they contain SPF.  Your moisturizer’s primary function is not UV protection but to provide your skin with moisture.  More importantly, SPF only protects skin from UVB rays and not UVA rays. It’s UVA rays that cause 90% of the signs of skin aging.
  3. Always apply broad spectrum sunscreen to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.  Signs of aging will not appear dramatically but accumulate daily and slowly signs of aging including age spots, droopy skin, fine lines and wrinkles will appear.  Prevention is easier, but that comes with being consistent.

“When you’re exposed to ultraviolet radiation, there’s a repair process that goes on constantly in each one of your exposed cells,” says Dr. Stephen I. Katz, director of NIH’s National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Try ocean friendly and reef safe Soul Story Sun Warrior Sunscreen. An oil-free and fast-absorbing facial and neck sunscreen that delivers dual-action protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. The light-weight formula is perfect to wear daily over your moisturizer, under makeup, or alone. The matte finish helps makeup apply easily with a smooth finish overlay.

Drink Enough Water

Relieve dry skin from the inside out by drinking six to eight glasses of water on a daily basis.

Skincare Tips: Relieving Dry Skin From The Inside Out

  1. Drink the required six to eight glasses of water daily.
  2. If you don’t like drinking water, try consuming herbal, non-caffeinated teas to increase hydration.
  3. Consume foods that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.
  4. Eat foods high in water.  For example, cucumbers have one of the highest percentage of water content and contain Vitamin A and C that keep skin hydrated.
  5. Avoid eating foods that are high in salt and preservatives and limit consumption of processed foods.  “If you eat foods high in salt content or preservatives, you will notice not only that your skin is puffy, but that it also is dry,” ~ Dr. A. Lamba

It’s the small actions every day that add up.  As the weather starts to cool down, you will notice that your skin will most likely start changing. If you are one of the more fortunate ones, you may not need to change your skincare routine and just limit your shower time and stay hydrated from the inside out.

In general, it’s healthy to moisturize your skin from the inside out by staying hydrated and consuming healthy, skin rich foods. It will help by increasing skin moisture levels, brighten skin complexion and increase skin elasticity.  If needed, add a richer moisturizer or add a serum, and always apply healthy broad spectrum sunscreen for anti-aging. Consistency in your skincare routine is essential for anti-aging and to maintain overall skin health.
